National Security to investigate UG Borteyman land attackers

The National Security Coordinator in Charge of Operations, Richard Jakpah, has said the agency would investigate and prosecute alleged persons who attacked workers on the University of Ghana (UG) lands at Borteyman.

It was reported that some persons allegedly assaulted workers of the Felord Limited Company working on the UG land at Borteyman last Friday and the  attackers claimed to be officers from the National Security.

Mr Jakpah stated that his outfit had not sanctioned any operation at the UG land and would, therefore, undertake a thorough investigation to bring to book all persons found to be part of the criminal enterprise, which was characterised by vandalism and forcefully taking money and belongings of workers on site.

“The Vice-Chancellor made a distress to our office and we have been working hand-in-hand to get to the bottom of it.

“There are many people who roam around claiming to be coming from National Security, perpetrating all manner of crimes. I can assure you that the National Security is not involved in this.

All this stealing, vandalism and beating people up does not represent National Security,” he said.

Mr Jakpah stated this during a visit to the Borteyman land site in the company of the Vice Chancellor of the UG, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah-Amfo and other staff members of the university.

Facts

Speaking on the history of the land, the Deputy Director of the Physical Development and Municipal Services Directorate at the UG, Ernest Boakye, said the UG Borteyman land formed part of 2,570.5 acres of land acquired under a certificate of title on March 7, 1940.

He said the government leased the northern part of 945.827 acres to the University College of Gold Coast (now UG) for 200 years commencing on April 15, 1953; while the southern portion was also given to the Department of Animal Husbandry, an agency under the Ministry of Food and Agriculture.

Mr Boakye added that the UG also acquired an additional 90-acre land, which has been in the name of the UG; however, it had not received any official correspondence from the government to the effect that the land has been reclaimed, and also, the indenture covering the university's land has not been revoked.

He said the university gave 100 acres of land to the Ministry of Sports, on which the Borteyman Sports Complex was built, and another 100 acres was given to the Felord Limited Company, which is currently building some accommodation facilities for university staff.

Collaboration

Prof. Appiah-Amfo, who described the assault on the workers as unfortunate, said the university would collaborate with the National Security leadership to get the perpetrators and ensure that work continued on the land.
