NIA announces Ghana Card registration for children

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has announced the commencement of registration for Ghanaian children aged six to 14 years at all its Premium Centres across the country.

The initiative is part of efforts to build a comprehensive and inclusive National Identity Register (NIR) that captures every Ghanaian from childhood.

In a statement released yesterday, it said the move  was also in fulfilment of its mandate to register all Ghanaians, both at home and abroad, to ensure every citizen has a secure and verifiable national identity.

Fees

Though acquiring a card for the first time is free, given that this service is being offered at the premium centres, parents and guardians would have to pay for the service.

The fee for first-time registration at Premium Centres is GH¢310, consistent with approved charges for premium services.

The authority also noted that effective Monday, September 15, 2025, the NIA will extend its online registration and booking system to all 11 remaining Premium Centres nationwide.

This will enable applicants to conveniently schedule appointments to ensure a smooth and timely process.

It is advised that parents or legal guardians who wish to get a card for their children or wards present one of these documents: a valid Ghanaian passport of the child, or the original copy of the child’s birth certificate.

Alternatively, a Ghana Card holder parent or legal guardian could vouch for the child.

The statement further gave the assurance that the Ghana Cards for children already registered will be issued in due course.

It further disclosed plans to extend registration services to all NIA District Offices across the country in the coming weeks to expand access. Ghana Tourism Guide

Background

Last year, the NIA hinted that it was going to launch the registration process for the Ghana Card for minors aged 6 to 14, starting on October 7, 2024.

Under that initial phase, the registration will take place in selected schools across various districts, making it easier for eligible children to enrol.

It is said that by focusing on educational institutions, the NIA aimed to provide a more convenient and accessible registration process for parents and guardians, reducing barriers that may have previously hindered participation.

“This registration for children aged 6 to 14 is essential to our goal of enrolling every Ghanaian. We’ve already registered individuals over 15 and initiated the process for those under 5.

This is the final phase for all citizens, including those abroad,” the NIA said.
