Tamale Metropolitan Assembly launches night sanitation task force
A night sanitation task force has been launched by the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly (TaMA) to keep the Central Business District (CBD) clean and boost the government’s 24-hour economy initiative.
The programme, dubbed “Tamale Sanitation Task Force: Action for a Cleaner City”, seeks to improve urban cleanliness and make the metropolis more attractive for night-time business activities.
The establishment of the task force follows the suspension of the sanitation module of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA).
So far, 60 youth, made up of both men and women, have been recruited to undertake the exercise under the supervision of the assembly’s waste management department.
The operations, which began on August 25, 2025, run daily from 9:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m., ensuring that commercial activities during the day are not disrupted.
Sanitation challenges
The Chief Executive Officer of the Tamale Metropolis, Abu Takoro, told the Daily Graphic that the initiative was designed to address the sanitation challenges in the metropolis while supporting the government’s vision of a 24-hour economy.

“Sanitation remains one of the biggest challenges in our city. With this night cleaning initiative, we are ensuring that our markets and business centres are kept clean without interfering with daily commercial activities.
“A clean city is not only healthy, but also attractive to investors and visitors,” he stated.
Commendation
The Director of Waste Management at TaMA, Martin Ahorlu, commended the MCE for introducing the initiative and called on civil society organisations (CSOs) to support efforts to address the metropolis’s sanitation challenges.
He also urged members of the task force to approach their work with diligence and dedication, noting that their role was critical to sustaining the city’s cleanliness.
