NPA donates GH¢1m to MahamaCares Fund - For treatment of chronic diseases

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has donated GH¢1 million to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as MahamaCares, in support of affordable health care for patients suffering from non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

The contribution was approved by the NPA Board as part of the authority’s budget, paving the way for its presentation last Tuesday (March 31) at a brief ceremony held at the NPA offices in Dzorwulu, Accra.

The event brought together representatives from both institutions. The NPA delegation was led by its Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, and included the Director of Administration and Insurance, Jackson Abbiw, the Director of Finance, Prince Nuamah Amoako, and the Director of Corporate Affairs, Maria Edith Oquaye.

The MahamaCares Fund was represented by its Administrator, Obuobia Darko-Opoku, alongside Policy Adviser Norbert Kipo; the Head of Administration, Nana Osei Owusu; Head of Corporate Communications, Afua Serwaa Offei; and Manager of Corporate Communications, Maame Efua Arthur.

Improving access

The CEO of the NPA explained that the donation aligned with President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to improve access to health care, particularly for individuals battling chronic conditions, such as kidney disease, which often require costly and frequent treatments such as dialysis.

He said the fund, now approved by Parliament and operational, was a key intervention aimed at easing the burden on vulnerable patients.

Mr Tameklo described the donation as the NPA’s contribution to a national cause, acknowledging that other institutions had already begun supporting the initiative.

"So the National Petroleum Authority is also joining. I've seen that other agencies have taken the lead. Unfortunately, we say it is not too late, so what we have decided to do is to also support, and thankfully, this matter came before the board, the board has given approval for an amount of 1 million Ghana cedis," he said.

Fight against NCDs

Administrator of the MahamaCares Fund, Obuobia Darko-Opoku, expressed profound gratitude to the NPA for its GH¢1 million donation, describing it as a significant and impactful contribution toward tackling non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the country.

She said the support was critical, adding that many institutions had been approached, yet few had responded with tangible assistance.

Ms Darko-Opoku described the initiative as a national call to action, highlighting that approximately 45 per cent of deaths in the country were linked to NCDs, making the fund’s work urgent and essential.

"We at the Trust Fund see it as huge and we want to say thank you to the National Petroleum Authority”.

"We have started well, and we know that with the help of agencies like yours, we will continue doing what we do and we know that it's making an impact already," the administrator of the fund said.
