PCG Moderator courts support of business community - For completion of 200th anniversary projects

Businessmen and women of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG) have been encouraged to support the church in successfully executing its numerous impactful projects.

It stated that as the oldest continuously existing church in Ghana, the PCG had made immense contributions to the country’s socio-economic development, particularly in education and health, largely through the support of its members and benefactors.

The church noted that it would continue to rely on such support to sustain its impactful projects as it prepared to celebrate its 200th anniversary.

The Moderator of the General Assembly of the PCG, Rt. Rev. Dr Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, made the call during his closing sermon at the 25th General Assembly at Nkwatia Kwahu.

He specifically called for support towards the completion of the church’s 200th anniversary legacy projects, which include the Ghana Cancer Centre and the National Retreat Centre, also known as the Kuntunse Project.

He said the support of the church’s businessmen, women, and other members in completing those projects would serve as a befitting symbol to celebrate the church’s foundation and heritage.

Projects

The PCG, founded in 1828, will climax its bicentennial celebrations in 2028.

In commemoration of the milestone, and as part of its legacy and heritage, the church is constructing a new community as a Spiritual Centre to support its growth and development.

The GH¢600 million project, located at Kuntunse in the Greater Accra Region, will feature a 1,600-seater conference hall, hostel facilities, road networks, and other auxiliary amenities. It is envisioned to serve as the heart of the church’s mission, hosting retreats, training leaders, and equipping the church to impact future generations.

In addition, the Presbyterian Comprehensive Cancer Centre is designed to be a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to delivering excellence in cancer diagnosis, treatment, research, and patient and family support.

The Cancer Centre, estimated at $144.6 million, will be located at Kpone-Katamanso in the Greater Accra Region, and upon completion, will be the largest cancer treatment facility in Ghana and the sub-region.

Church’s heritage

Rt. Rev. Dr Opare Kwakye, appealing to all members of the church for support to ensure the timely completion of the projects, noted that this was in line with the church’s history, as the Basel missionaries who established it were themselves businessmen.

“Part of our church’s heritage is the fact that the Basel mission that founded our church, which sent missionaries to start our church in Ghana, was made up of only a few theologians. Most of the leaders of the Basel Mission were businessmen.

“They were Christian businessmen who believed that the resources that the Lord had brought to them were to be applied or employed for mission.

“The founding fathers of the Church laid the foundation; it is for us to build on that heritage and legacy.

“So, all Presbyterian businessmen and businesswomen and all who are in the position to do so, let us celebrate our heritage by supporting to ensure the timely completion of our legacy projects,” the Moderator emphasised.

Bryan Acheampong

Rt. Rev. D. Opare Kwakye also used the occasion to express special appreciation to the Member of Parliament (MP) for Abetifi, a businessman and member of the church, Dr Bryan Acheampong, for donating GH¢2 million in support of the Kuntunse Project.

Dr Acheampong also sponsored the 25th General Assembly.

“Let me also, on behalf of the entire church, express our collective appreciation to honourable Dr Bryan Acheampong, who solely sponsored the accommodation and meals for all commissioners and corresponding members.

“He has not only supported the Kuntunse project, but has also enabled us to have one of the most successful General Assemblies in recent times.

“We pray for God’s blessings upon Dr Byan Acheampong, and I want all Presbyterians to follow his example,” the Moderator stated.
