Rainstorm causes havoc at Assin Jakai, Assin Nuanua - 149 Affected, pupils study under trees

A Severe rainstorm swept through Assin Nuanua Fantse in the Assin South district in the Central Region on Friday, ripping off the roof of the community's junior high school.

Several households were also not spared in the disaster as seven homes and 27 people were displaced by the rainstorm.

About GH¢292,000 in property has been destroyed with 119 learners left to study at the mercy of the weather without a classroom.

The strong winds that accompanied the rain ripped the school's roof and caused extensive damage to the relatively old school building, leaving it with cracks in the pillars and walls.

Furniture and teaching materials were also left exposed to the elements and some were destroyed.

According to the head teacher of the school, Peter Komladza, the situation had compelled them to conduct classes under trees as a temporary measure. 

Impact

He emphasised that the situation had severely impacted teaching and learning, and urgent attention was needed to help provide a conducive learning environment for the pupils.

Mr Komladza appealed to the government and the Assin South District Assembly to build a new JHS block for the school.

Residents called on old students and the Member of Parliament for Assin South, John Ntim Fordjour, to support the school.

The assemblymember for the Assin Adiembra-Nuanua Electoral Area, Timothy Sakyi, appealed for help to address the situation and reiterated the appeal for support.

Last Sunday, another rainstorm at Assin Jakai also in the Assin South District displaced 30 after a heavy rainstorm destroyed their homes.

The storm, which began in the late hours of Sunday evening, caused extensive damage to 10 homes.

Residents who were affected are now being accommodated by neighbours.

The community has called on relevant authorities and philanthropists to provide aid and support to ease their plight.

The Assin South National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) Coordinator, David Danny Dadzie, had visited that place with officials to assess the situation for further action.
