Remove barriers for women in transport, logistics sector

The Women in Logistics and Transport (WiLAT), the women’s wing of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), has been urged to dismantle barriers for women in the sector to thrive.

That, the Deputy Minister of Transport, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, said, would not only promote fairness but also harness the full potential of its workforce to drive progress and innovation in the sector.

“This is not simply about gender equality, it’s about building a more resilient and competitive logistics and transport industry that works for all. To every woman executive, when you reach new heights, extend a helping hand to lift another woman so that our collective progress becomes unstoppable.

“Let us work together to create opportunities, dismantle barriers and ensure that women in the logistics and transport sector not only participate, but thrive as innovators, decision makers and leaders of tomorrow,” she said at the maiden forum of WiLAT, in Accra.

Organised by WiLAT, the forum was on the theme: “Paving your Path and Reaching new Heights in the Logistics and Transport Sector”.

The two-day forum sought to create an opportunity for the women in the logistics and transport forum to learn from trailblazers, share experiences and spark new ideas that will shape the future of logistics and transport.

The deputy minister explained that unity among women in the transport sector would help them to achieve greater heights.

She commended the leadership of CILT for organising a forum for women in the Logistics and Transport sector.

By organising a forum like this, Ms Affo-Toffey said they were nurturing mentorship, fostering leadership and providing the support that women needed to climb higher and reach new heights.

Commitment

The President of CILT Ghana, Mark Amoamah, reiterated CILT Ghana’s commitment to ensuring that WiLAT, and for that matter, women, rose from strength to strength in harmony in the logistics and transport sector.

“The logistics, transport and supply chain sectors have traditionally been perceived as male-dominated and as women, this means you must be ready to defy all the odds to build new skills, embrace technology and position yourself to foster resilience to rise higher,” he said.

He added that CILT would continue building programmes and advocate for policies that created equal opportunities for women to thrive and lead, adding, “Our vision is a profession where competence, innovation and leadership are gender-inclusive”.

The Acting Chairperson of WiLAT Ghana, Mabel Kabutey, said the forum was a call to action for every woman to take possession of her career journey in the logistics and transport industry.

In an industry as dynamic and vital as logistics and transport, there is no limit to what we can achieve when women are empowered, supported and given the space to lead, although this is a male-dominated industry,” she stated.
