Rains and thunder expected in Volta, Greater Accra, Ashanti and Central Regions – GMet

The Ghana Meteorological Agency has issued a rain alert for southern Ghana, warning that a rain cloud has engulfed the southeast of the country and is expected to spread to more areas within the southern belt this afternoon into the evening.

In an update issued on Sunday, June 14, 2026, the agency stated that the cloud is producing rain of varying intensity within the Volta, Eastern and Greater Accra regions. Separate localised rain clouds have also been observed within the Oti, Central, Western and Ashanti regions.

Thunder and windy conditions expected

The clouds are expected to build further and spread to more areas within the aforementioned regions to produce rain with thunder. Occasional windy conditions will also be experienced during the period, the agency warned.

The alert is effective from 3:05pm on June 14, 2026 and is set to expire at 9:00pm the same day. The agency classified the severity of the event as moderate, with the urgency marked as expected and certainty as likely.

Affected regions

The alert covers eight regions: Volta, Oti, Eastern, Greater Accra, Bono East, Ashanti, Central and Western.

Precautionary measures

The Ghana Meteorological Agency advised residents in the affected regions to take precautionary measures ahead of the approaching rains.

"Residents in the affected regions are advised to take precautionary measures ahead of the approaching rains. Avoid outdoor activities during heavy downpours, and stay clear of flooded roads and waterways," the agency stated.

The public has been urged to stay updated through official weather bulletins and alerts from the Ghana Meteorological Agency.

Flood risk concerns

The rain alert comes at a time when parts of southern Ghana are still recovering from previous rains and the controlled spillage of the Weija Dam last month, which caused flooding in downstream communities. The Greater Accra Regional Security Council has previously identified flood-prone areas including Odawna Sahara, Adabraka Official Town, Alajo Central, and communities within Weija-Gbawe, Ga West and Ga East municipalities.

Motorists have been advised to exercise caution on the roads, avoid driving through flooded areas and to park vehicles safely during heavy downpours. Residents in low-lying areas have been encouraged to monitor water levels and be prepared to move to higher ground if necessary.

The Ghana Meteorological Agency continues to monitor the situation and will issue further updates as the rain clouds develop. The public has been encouraged to follow official GMet social media channels for real-time information. The agency's alert is valid until 9:00pm on Sunday, June 14, 2026.
