Report absentee tutors-UEW Vice-Chancellor urges students
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), Rev. Fr Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni, has asked distance learning students to report tutors who continuously absent themselves from tutorials for the necessary action to be taken against them.
He said the university had noted with grave concern reported cases of continuous absenteeism among some tutors and students at some of the study centres.
"I urge you not to shield tutors who fail to turn up for tutorials. It is to your detriment to defend such indefensible and unprofessional behaviours,” Prof. Afful-Broni stated.
Matriculation
At a matriculation ceremony for distance education students of the Kumasi campus of the university last Saturday, Prof. Afful-Broni reminded the students that attendance of lectures and tutorials constituted 10 per cent of their continuous assessment.
According to him, students who failed to turn up for tutorials would lose some continuous assessment score or face other forms of sanctions.
He explained that per the school’s regulations, "a student who absents himself or herself for a number of tutorial days shall be deemed to have withdrawn from the course”.
"I, therefore, encourage you to report those consistently absent tutors, so that action could be taken to ensure that you attain the maximum benefit of the programme you have paid for and also enable the university to serve you better and improve the quality of the distance education programme in the country," he said.
Software application
Prof. Afful-Broni announced that the institute had successfully developed a software application known as the UEW Distance Education App which could be downloaded to enable students to have access to all modules on time.
He explained that the new app would go a long way to ensure that the students received the digital versions of learning materials and encouraged them to make good use of it.
"All you need to do is install the app on your tablet, computers and mobile phones and read the modules wherever you are. We will continue to ensure that all your modules are supplied to you in good time," he said.
