STACAN donates to Dzorwulu Special School

Standing Together Against Child Abuse and Neglect (STACAN), a non-governmental organisation (NGO) has donated food and other items to the Dzorwulu Special School.

The items presented to the school included bags of rice, toiletries, soft drinks, detergents and bottled water.

The donation was in line with the vision of STACAN, a group formed by Ms Elsie Owusu-Kumi, a social worker based in the United Kingdom with the support of other Ghanaians in the UK , to protect the welfare and well -being of children.

Welfare of children

Presenting the items, the country director of STACAN, Madam Georgina Boateng, said the organisation decided to donate to the Dzorwulu Special School due to the important role the school plays in educating children, especially with regard to those with special needs.

She said the purpose of STACAN was to promote the well-being of children and work to address issues peculiar to the interest of children by creating awareness and lobbying policy makers to prioritise the needs of children.

“We seek to educate and empower by creating an awareness of what constitutes child abuse and neglect, and equipping parents, carers, professionals and all individuals who are involved in meeting the needs of children with the skills and knowledge needed.”

“Peculiar Issues we touch on include: Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), sexual abuse/rape of children, Child Marriage, Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE), Abuse linked to Faith, Internet Safety, mental health and well-being of children, Child Labour, Children branded as witches, domestic violence and abuse and the impact on children, Child Trafficking,” she said.

Appreciation

The Headmaster of the school, Frederick Tetteh, thanked STACAN for the gesture and for remembering the school in its scheme of work.

He said children were the future and, therefore, any support to help in their development was a step in the right direction.
