The power of becoming: Reflections on growth and giving

International Women’s Day (IWD), which falss on March 8 every year, is a reminder that progress is not accidental.

It is built over time through courage, opportunity and the willingness of others to invest in us.

The international theme for this years celebration is Give To Gain.

It is a day to reflect on growth, not just on achievements, but on character, confidence and purpose.

When I think about my own journey, my mind goes back to my days at the Wesley Girls’ High School.

Like many young girls, I was still learning who I was and what I could become.

During that time, a senior who had just completed school gave me a book as a gift.

It was a book centred on personal growth and striving to be the best version of oneself.

At the time, it felt like a thoughtful gesture marking the end of her school journey. Years later, I understood its deeper meaning.

That gift was an expression of belief, an unspoken message that growth was possible and that my future mattered.

That moment reflects a broader story shared by many women.

Growth is rarely a solo effort. It is often the result of someone choosing to give, whether through mentorship, encouragement, knowledge or access.

Over the years, deliberate advocacy and consistent efforts to uplift women and girls have reshaped opportunities and expanded possibilities.

Today, women are increasingly visible in leadership, business, science, policy and community development.

These advances are not coincidences; they are outcomes of sustained action and collective resolve.

Give to gain

This year’s IWD theme, “Give to Gain,” speaks directly to this reality.

When support is extended to women and girls, the returns are far-reaching. Giving access to education leads to informed decision-making.

Giving opportunities creates confident leaders. Giving mentorship builds resilience and continuity.

Empowering women strengthens families, institutions and economies alike.

There is fulfilment in emerging, finding confidence, purpose and direction.

There is also fulfilment in evolving, growing through experience, adapting to change and refining one’s values along the way.

Becoming the best version of oneself is not about arriving at a destination; it is about remaining open to growth, learning and impact.

IWD

As we mark IWD, it is important to acknowledge those who have poured into our journeys; teachers, mentors, seniors, advocates and allies whose actions made a difference, even when they seemed small.

Just as importantly, we must recognise our responsibility to give forward.

Each act of guidance, encouragement or support has the potential to shape another woman’s path.

Progress thrives when generosity meets purpose.

When women are supported, societies advance.

When women rise, they create space for others to rise as well.

Today, we celebrate how far we have come not only in the milestones we have achieved but also in the strength we have gained along the way.

And as we move forward, may we continue to give, knowing that in doing so, we all stand to gain.

Happy International Women’s Day!
