Zoomlion Nigeria secures €40m waste management deal
The Jospong Group of Companies has secured a €40 million waste management deal through its subsidiary, Zoomlion Nigeria Limited, with Germany-based FIMA Industries GmbH and Faun Umwelttechnik GmbH.
The export deal between Zoomlion and FIMA Industries GmbH and Faun Umwelttechnik GmbH is expected to promote sustainable practices and a cleaner environment through the export of waste management services and equipment.
This strategic partnership marks a major expansion of Zoomlion Nigeria Limited’s waste management capabilities.
The collaboration maximising Zoomlion's expertise in waste collection and management with FIMA's cutting-edge technology and global reach.
The German government is facilitating funding for the project through Euler Hermes, the European country’s export credit agency, and Oddo BHF Bank.
By combining Zoomlion's expertise with FIMA's innovative technology, the partnership is expected to drive sustainable development across Africa, demonstrating the capacity to deliver high-quality infrastructure and paving the way for future projects.
The signing ceremony took place in Lagos, Nigeria, last Monday, with senior FIMA managers and representatives from Germany in attendance.
The Executive Director of Environment and Sanitation, Haider Said, and Country Director of Zoomlion Nigeria, Habiba Abubakar, signed on behalf of Jospong Group, while the Chief Executive Officer of FIMA Industries, Markus Maierhofer, signed on behalf of his company.
Success story
Mr Said stated that following his outfit's success story in Ghana and the partnership with FIMA industry, along with the support of both the German and Lagos governments, the waste management company was now in Nigeria to establish three waste treatment plants.
"This contract value is around €40 million, which will fund the procurement of these three facilities," Mr Said said.
"This project aims to make a significant impact on environmental preservation, with an expected reduction of about 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 (carbon dioxide) emissions annually. Over the next 12 to 24 months, the Jospong Group will be investing around $200 million in Lagos State for waste management initiatives.
"We hope this project greatly contributes to protecting the environment," Mr Said added.
Finalised effort
Mr Maierhofer explained that the contract would finalise the free waste treatment plant system in Lagos through Zoomlion, which is considered the biggest waste management company in Africa.
"This will help to recycle compost to keep the environment clean and safe," he said, adding that "it is a complete game-changer because it will help to reduce waste in the whole of Lagos State".
According to him, the project is all about biological waste treatment.
"We are ready to invest about €10 million in mechanisms for the waste treatment plant to make this project possible," Mr Maierhofer emphasised.
Processes
The Head of Business Development Export at FAUN Umwelttechnik GmbH, Lucas Doerr, said the waste management process would involve waste collectors who would gather waste and transport it to designated transfer stations.
The waste, he said, would then be transferred to a solid waste recycling plant and then to an engineered landfill management facility for proper disposal.
He gave an assurance that the milestone would mark just the beginning, with more accomplishments to follow.
