Water companies from Ghana, Sierra Leone sign MoU

The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL;) and Guma Valley Water Company (GVWC) of Sierra Leone have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to help build the capacity of staff of the GVWC.

By the agreement, the GWCL will train and expose staff of the GVWC to Ghana’s advanced equipment and management operations in the water sector.

Personnel from GVWC would further be trained to acquire skills in customer care, information technology and safe water management practices.

The agreement, which spans a period two years, would be funded by the Millennium Challenge Coordinating Unit (MCCU), a United States (US) foreign agency.

Capacity building

In an interaction with the Daily Graphic in Accra last Monday, the Head of Communications at the GWCL, Mr Stanley Martey, said the improved use of technology in all departments of the GWCL had helped the company to become efficient and effective.

He said, “the accord between the GWCL and GVWC emphasises the high level of expertise that the GWCL has achieved to make it capable of helping the GVWC to embark on upgrading its infrastructure.

“We are happy to offer our support, help each other succeed and strengthen the bond between our two countries and utility companies”.

“We are also humbled to have been chosen to help in enhancing the capacities of the staff of GVWC through experiential learning,” he said.

Support

According to Mr Martey, the arrangement had come at a time when the GWCL had successfully implemented several performance improvement programmes (PIP) undertaken by its staff and the results of which, he said, had been exceptionally good.

He said under a five-year contract the GWCL had with Vitens in Holland and Rand Water in South Africa, the company now had the ability and quality to fully manage its affairs.

“Our experiences gained from this alliance is what puts the GWCL in the current position of partnering GVWC to upgrade its staff,” he said.
