Give equal opportunities to disabled children: Parents urged

Parents have been advised to give children with disabilities equal opportunities and respect as given to children with no disability.

The Director of Multi Video Star and Staple Plus Productions, Mr Samuel Obeng Ansah, who gave the advice, said this would enable children with disability to have confidence to develop their God-given talents to help them live decent lives in their adult age.

He explained that when persons with disability, particularly children, were assisted and supported, it would help to reduce the number of people who went to the streets for alms.

Programme

Mr Obeng said this in an interview with the Daily Graphic after the launch of a programme dubbed "Talent Hour for Persons with Disability" in Accra.

The programme, which would be aired on Ghana Television (GTV) as a reality show, is aimed at encouraging persons with disability to demonstrate to the public how they could put their abilities to use to make a living.

It is also intended to encourage and inspire parents who have children with any form of disability to give equal opportunities and respect to such children.

Discrimination

Mr Obeng expressed worry over the culture where children with disability were often discriminated against by some parents.

"Parents must treat all their children, including those with disability, with equal respect and give them equal opportunities," he stated.

According to him, people with disability have a lot of potential that could enable them to make a living when supported and given the needed training.

"It is our hope that the mind-set people have about persons with disability would be changed through this programme because disability is not inability," he said.

Attendance

Mr Obeng has, therefore, appealed to benevolent organisations and individuals, as well as corporate bodies, to support the programme in order to give hope to children with disability and their parents.

The launch was attended by representatives from the Ghana Federation of Disabilities (GFD),the Centre for Employment of  Persons with Disabilities, the Christian Fellowship of the Disabled and other disability organisations.

Patrons at the launch were entertained with music by Nicolas Omane Achampong, the Royal Sparrows Band and Akropong School for the Blind.
