The Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) vehicles come with extricating equipment which can be used to rescue victims trapped in mangled vehicles, boreholes, mines and collapsed trenches.

The vehicles will also be used to combat fires on pilot bases at Amasaman, Weija and on the motorway in the Greater Accra Region.

Addressing the media at the event, the Chief Fire Officer, Dr Albert Brown Gaisie, said plans were underway to deploy some of the multipurpose fire engines to accident-prone areas across the country by the end of the year.

According to him, a lot of people usually died at accident scenes when they were not rescued early enough.

That, he said, informed the service’s decision to secure the vehicles, adding that: “Victims of accidents will now get quick and prompt response.”

Dr Gaisie said the service owed it a duty to protect the lives of the public, including those who had been involved in accidents.

“We encourage people to call the service’s main line 192 as soon as they encounter any accident scene and we’ll be ready to provide the needed support,” he said.
