GNFS enhances fire safety measures in major markets across the country

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has announced new directives aimed at improving fire safety within the country’s major markets.

A statement issued on January 14 by the Head of Public Relations, Divisional Officer II Desmond E. Ackah, said the initiatives included the deployment of personnel and fire appliances to various markets nationwide from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily, ensuring consistent fire coverage.

DO II Ackah noted that a task force would patrol the markets daily to enable swift action in the event of fire outbreaks and maintain constant vigilance.

“GNFS will establish fire units/posts in key markets across the country to intensify fire safety education, conduct inspections and ensure compliance with fire safety protocols,” he stated.

He further explained that GNFS personnel assigned to market protection duties would submit daily Situation Reports (SITREPs) to the National Headquarters Operations platform for analysis and further action.

The GNFS assured the public of close collaboration with market authorities, the Ghana Police Service and the National Security to ensure comprehensive surveillance, effective protection and prompt response to fire-related incidents.

DO II Ackah highlighted that these measures formed part of a broader strategy to mitigate fire risks in markets.

“These measures take immediate effect and underscore the GNFS’s dedication to ensuring the safety and security of markets, which are vital to the country’s economy and daily life. The cooperation of all stakeholders, including market authorities, traders and the general public, is essential for the success of this initiative,” he added.
