GNFS recommends fire safety measures for high-rise buildings

The Ledzokuku Krowor Municipal Assembly (LEKMA) Fire Station has urged companies in high-rise buildings to install fire alarms and sensors to early detect fire when it occurs.

The Divisional Officer at the station, DOII Theophilus Dangbe, who made the call, said it was important to have such safety measures in high-rise buildings to help reduce the impact of fires before the arrival of fire service personnel.

“The Ghana National Fire Service is advising all companies with high-rise buildings to install smoke detectors and fire alarm system. These will alert occupants to know what is happening at any floor of the building when fire occurs,” he said.

Mr Dangbe made the call at a fire safety education for 30 staff of Entrance Pharmaceuticals and Research Centre, a subsidiary of Tobinco Pharmaceuticals Ltd, on the Spintex Road.

Recommendation

DOII Dangbe recommended detectors of fire, heat, smoke and alarm systems to go with automatic sprinklers for high-rise buildings as some of the fire mitigating measures.

“When you have sprinklers and fire alarms and there is any fire, these fire sprinklers will break out and pour water on the fire at its initial stage to minimise the fire before our personnel arrive, and it will help save lives and property,” he added.

High-risk facilities

DOII Dangbe said the LEKMA Fire Station had identified a number of high-risk facilities and hazard zones within the municipality and, therefore, targeted some of the companies in high-rise buildings for safety recommendations and fire education.

The Factory Occupational Health and Safety Executive at the Entrance Pharmaceuticals, Ms Jennifer Jessie Mills-Graves, said the company had a safety committee that ensured safe and fire-free working environment.

“We have a safety committee within the factory which is responsible for seeing to it that correct behaviours are exhibited,” she said.

Ms Mills-Graves added that the company also had codified safety procedures displayed all around the company premises, with scheduled training and orientations sessions to enforce the safety rules and procedures.
