A tanker (with registration number GN 2963-10)  loaded with 15,000 tonnes of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) rammed into the out-patient department (OPD) of the Takoradi Hospital, destroying the building, and records of patients after discharging part of its cargo to the hospital’s kitchen. The tanker belongs to a contractor of GOIL.

The incident halted the operations of the hospital for hours as the gas gushed out of the vehicle, emitting gas into the rooms.

Fortunately, there was no fire at the kitchen but patients who were on admission in wards located on the upper part of the OPD were immediately evacuated.

Speaking at the hand over the Corporate Affairs Manager of GOIL, Mr Cyril Oppong, said rebuilding the OPD showed the commitment of the company to its responsibility.

The OPD, he said, formed one of the integral parts of health care delivery.

In addition to the reconstruction of the facility, he said the company had  reinforced the structure with pillars to make it more robust and added furniture for the comfort of the patients.

The Administrator of Takoradi Hospital, Mr Frank Owusu Asare, who received the items and the keys to the facility on behalf of the hospital’s administration, said the hospital was grateful to GOIL for not abandoning them.

He said the alacrity attached to the completion of work reflected the image of a successful Ghanaian company, which is committed to its fellow compatriots.

The Takoradi Depot Manager of GOIL, Mr Stephen E. Asare,  commended the hospital for its  co-operation.
