GRIDCo on why there was nationwide electric power outage in Ghana

The Ghana Grid Company LTD.(GRIDCo) has explained that the National Interconnected Transmission System experienced a power system disturbance around 3:11am.

This is why there was a widespread nationwide power outage at dawn on Wednesday.

According to GRIDCO, it was working to restore power.

It said the power system disturbance is what has  caused widespread interruptions in electricity supply in the country.

The incident occurred at approximately 3:11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, leading to the simultaneous tripping of some power generating plants and affecting the stability of the national electricity transmission network, GRIDCo said.

It said it had immediately activated its established system restoration procedures to restore electricity supply to affected customers.

The company explained that the disturbance resulted in the automatic shutdown of some generating plants connected to the national grid, causing outages in several areas.


GRIDCo said its engineers and system operators had been deployed and were working continuously, in collaboration with other power sector stakeholders, to restore supply within the shortest possible time while ensuring the safety and integrity of the power system.

"Our engineers and system operators are working continuously, in close collaboration with power sector stakeholders, to restore power within the shortest possible time without compromising safety," the statement said.

The company assured the public that restoring electricity supply remained its top priority and that all necessary operational measures had been activated to stabilise the grid.

As part of its response, GRIDCo said it had also commenced a comprehensive technical investigation to determine the precise cause of the disturbance.

It noted that identifying the source of the system event was essential to preventing similar occurrences in the future and strengthening the reliability of the national transmission network.
