Health Ministry sets up probe into alleged “medical kalabule” at Korle-Bu and Ridge

The Ministry of Health has constituted a seven-member committee to investigate allegations of unethical medical practices at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge).

The committee is chaired by Dr Inua Yusuf, Head of Legal Affairs at the Ministry, and has been tasked with conducting a comprehensive inquiry into what has been described as “medical kalabule”.

The other members are Dr Eric Kofi Ngyedu, Chief Executive Officer of the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital and Dean of Chief Executive Officers for Teaching Hospitals; Dr Adam Abass, a neurosurgeon at the Tamale Teaching Hospital and President of the Ghana Academy of Neurosurgeons; Dr George Sabblah, Deputy Chief Executive Officer for Technical Operations at the Food and Drugs Authority and its representative on the committee; Dr Nicholas Adjabu, a biomedical engineer with the Biomedical Engineering Unit of the Ministry of Health; Dr Frederick Kwarteng, the Ghana Medical Association’s representative and Head of Trauma and Orthopaedics as well as Accident and Emergency at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital; and Prof. John Osae-Kwapong, a Democracy and Development Fellow at CDD-Ghana representing civil society organisations.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry, the committee draws membership from the Ghana Medical Association, the Food and Drugs Authority, teaching hospitals, civil society and biomedical engineering, reflecting a broad-based approach to the inquiry.

The statement said the committee’s key objectives include assessing existing governance, regulatory and oversight systems within the affected facilities, with a view to identifying gaps and preventing unauthorised or unethical medical practices.

The committee has been directed to submit its final report and recommendations to the Minister of Health by February 10, 2026.

The Ministry assured the public of its full cooperation with the investigation and reaffirmed its commitment to upholding ethical standards, professionalism and accountability across Ghana’s healthcare system.
