The document contains resolutions, re-affirmations and commitments of the government and partners to put in more action to provide quality health care to Ghanaians.

As part of the agreement, the partners would provide expertise and funds to boost the capacity of the ministry to address the myriad of health challenges facing the country, especially in combating communicable diseases, malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS.

The development donors are also to support the country to accelerate its commitment to achieving Millennium Development Goals four and five; reducing by two-thirds the under-five mortality rate and by three-quarters the maternal mortality ratio by 2015.

Signing aide-mémoire

At the signing ceremony the Minister of Health, Miss Sherry Ayitey, expressed her gratitude to the country’s development partners for their commitment to support efforts at improving healthcare delivery.

She expressed the commitment of her ministry to ensure that every resource given out was prudently utilised, saying, “we will be accountable for everything”.

She outlined various commitments to improving healthcare and combatting nagging health issues such as the importation of fake medicines into Ghana.

“I wish to express gratitude to the UK government for providing assistance to the Food and Drugs Authority to boost its capacity to have better control over the circulation of fake drugs,” she stated.

“We will ensure equity as far as access to quality health care is concerned,” she emphasised.

She stressed that efforts were being made to reach out to and improve health care delivery in vulnerable and remote communities across the country.

Ready to assist Ghana

A representative of the development partners, Ms Sally Taylor, expressed their readiness to assist Ghana to accelerate progress towards the provision of quality health care to the people.

“Ghana is making progress but more efforts are needed in other areas to tackle the MDGs,” she said.
