The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has urged relevant stakeholders to take action and put measures in place to prevent a recurrence of the June 3, 2015 Disaster.

That, it explained, required that the authorities step up efforts in addressing the causes of floods in order to confront the issues head-on.

According to the Director of Relief and Reconstruction at NADMO, Mr Gavivina Yao Tamakloe, some disasters such as that which occurred on June 3 in Accra could have been avoided if the authorities had been bold in addressing the causes.

Support

Mr Tamakloe was speaking last Saturday in Accra when the Marshallan Relief and Development Services (MAREDES), a non-governmental organisation of the Knights and Ladies of Marshall, donated assorted items worth GH¢15,000 to NADMO for onward distribution to victims of the flood and fire disaster.
Items donated included bags of rice, gari, boxes of fish, detergents, gallons of cooking oil and used clothing.

Never again

Receiving the items, Mr Tamakloe commended MAREDES on behalf of the victims for the gesture and assured the organisation that the items would be distributed to the victims accordingly.

He further advised the public to desist from choking drains as that did not allow water to flow easily.
Mr Tamakloe said dumping of refuse into drains and buildings that were on watercourses contributed to flooding in the country.

The Board Chairman of MAREDES, Sir Knight Edward Aloysius Prah, said he believed the items would help to reduce the suffering of the victims.
He said the donation was in line with the mission of the Knights and Ladies of Marshall to take Christ to the world through charitable services and the vision to help create a community for the poor, the distressed and the needy in society.
