KMA close down Kejetia Lorry Terminal for reconstruction

Armed police personnel Monday guarded workers of the Brazilian construction firm, Contracta, to barricade the entire Kejetia Lorry Terminal in Kumasi to make way for a re-construction project at the place.

Traders at the lorry terminal in a protest had filed a motion for an injunction to restrain the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) from going ahead with the reconstruction of bus terminal.

The traders are praying the court to declare that the deliberate extension of the Kumasi Central Market project to the Kejetia Bus Terminal was wrong, illegal and a calculated attempt to overreach them.

The Kumasi High Court will hear the motion on July 10, 2015.

Graphiconline’s Ashanti Regional Correspondent Donald Ato Dapatem reported that before that could happen, workers of the construction firm handling the project were on Monday morning accompanied by police personnel to the Kejetia Lorry Terminal to begin work.

Dapatem reported that the main entrances to the lorry terminal were blocked with 40-feeter containers to prevent traders from entering the premises.

The situation, he said had worsened the already congested central business district in Kumasi as drivers; mostly taxi cabs have moved their stations to portions of the already jammed road.
