The beneficiary schools which were selected from the Western, Central, Upper East, Upper West, Northern and the Greater Accra regions range from the basic, junior high to senior high schools.

The books cover a wide range of areas including Mathematics, science, social studies, reading and reference materials.

Books for Africa

The Regional Grand Knight of the Noble Order, Worthy Brother Samuel Kingsford Arthur, who presented the books to the beneficiary schools, explained that the books were a donation from an American organisation, Books for Africa.

“These books are headed for the once-empty library shelves in the classrooms of selected rural schools and into the hands of children, many of whom have never before held a book.. Each book will hopefully be read over and over again by several students,” he said.

Worthy Bro Arthur said his administration, upon taking office, embarked on a “book project” initiative two years ago aimed at providing reading materials to some of the less-endowed schools in the selected regions.

“We intend to advance knowledge, bridge the literacy gap and create a culture of literacy by providing the tools of empowerment to the next generation of parents, teachers and leaders in Africa.

“It is when this literacy gap is closed that we can build a community of knowledge, empowerment and equality,” he explained.

Contribution of MAREDES

The Executive Director of MAREDES, Mr Derx Baffour, explained that since the establishment of the organisation, a wing of the Noble Order, it had undertaken a number of projects and interventions to support the less-privileged.

Touching on education, he explained that the organisation had distributed 10,000 mathematical sets to girls in JHS across the country, adding that the organisation would be organising a workshop for mathematics teachers to be drawn from various districts in the country to upgrade their teaching skills and introduce them to current trends in the teaching of mathematics.
