More than 200 administrative staff members and about five persons pursuing doctorate degrees are expected to benefit from the programme, which is expected to improve the academic credentials  of staff members of the university.

Unlike other existing programmes, the career development centre is expected to provide a course outline purposely directed at perfecting the academic career of beneficiaries for the enhancement of work in the various faculties.

The career development facility is an initiative placed under the Malaria Capacity Development Consortium and funded by Wellcome Trust in the United Kingdom.

The programme was begun in 2008 and covers five African universities, including the KNUST, and provides an opportunity for beneficiaries to build their capacities.

The Co-ordinator for the project, Dr Harry Tagbor, said the college had received £1 million out of the projected £7 million voted by Wellcome Trust for the nine universities worldwide.

He said plans were afoot to expand the programme in future to capture other faculties of the university. He noted, however, that it would be contingent on the successes achieved by the College of Health Sciences.

The Provost of the College, Prof. Tsiri Agbenyegah, inaugurated the fully furnished centre. The College of Health Sciences was on the occasion presented with a seed money of       £50,000.

Wellcome Trust is a global charitable foundation dedicated to improving health by supporting bright minds in science, the humanities, social sciences and public administration.
