NMC calls on media houses to equip their regional offices

The Chairman of the National Media Commission (NMC), Mr Kabral Blay-Amihere, has called on the board and management of state-owned media houses to provide the necessary facilities at their respective regional offices to meet the vision and mission of their organisations.

He also expressed the need for them to build the capacities of their regional correspondents to ensure quality reportage on events in the regions and not limit their activities to their head offices in Accra.

Mr  Blay-Amihere made the call when he visited the Northern Regional office of the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL) in Tamale last Wednesday.

The Chairman of the NMC in the company of the Deputy Executive  Secretary of the Commission, Mr Alexander Bannerman, and a member of the commission, Mr Perry Ofosu, are on a three-day working visit to the three northern regions to acquaint themselves with the operations of the various media houses in the regions and the challenges they encounter in the discharge of their duties.

Logistical constraints

He observed that logistical constraints had sometimes hampered the activities of regional reporters thus making it difficult for them to discharge their duties efficiently.

The chairman, therefore, commended the staff in the regions for their hard work despite the challenges they often encountered in their duties.

Advice

Mr  Blay-Amihere, however, advised the reporters to always strive for excellence by giving fair and equitable coverage to all communities.

On next year’s general election, he admonished them to exhibit professionalism in their reportage on all political activities to help minimise suspicions and the related tensions that often characterised  election.

Mr Blay-Amihere further urged the media to continue to play their watchdog role effectively by holding the government and all in leadership accountable on behalf of the citizenry.

The visit

He explained that members of the commission were in the region to learn at first hand the problems faced by the staff and to bring them to the attention of the board members of the media houses.

According to him, the commission would continue to deliver on its mandate and would not interfere in editorial matters of state-owned media houses.

The Northern Regional Corespondent of the Daily Graphic, Mr Samuel Duodu, who received the delegation, thanked them for the visit and their words of encouragement.
