Kofi Akordor honoured
A former Night Editor of the Daily Graphic, Mr Kofi Akordor, has been honoured by a reader of the paper for championing the cause of responsible journalism in the print media.
Togbi Gobah Tengey Seddoh, who has been an avid reader of the paper for over 60 years, said Mr Akordor had distinguished himself as a professional journalist worthy of emulation. He, therefore, urged young journalists to emulate him.
According to him, Mr Akordor’s incisive and consistent “From My Rooftop” column in the Daily Graphic every Tuesday revealed his prowess as a great journalist.
Togbi Seddoh presented him with a citation and a piece of Volta Kente called “ Kpekui” (meaning unbreakable shingles), in appreciation of his sterling performance in the inky fraternity.
Presentation ceremony
At a brief ceremony on the premises of the Graphic Communications Group Limited in Accra yesterday, Togbi Seddoh commended Mr Akordor for his immense contribution to the growth and readership of the Daily Graphic.
The citation described him as a great journalist who writes vividly on contemporary issues in a globalised technological age.
The Managing Director of the Graphic Communications Group Limited, Mr Kenneth Ashigbey, commended Togbi Seddoh for recognising Mr Akordor’s journalistic efforts and encouraged other readers to emulate the example of Togbi Seddoh because it indicated that journalists were appreciated for their service to society.
Advice to journalists
Mr Ashigbey also called on journalists to work diligently because their efforts would definitely be appreciated by people they did not even know.
He said journalists improved their work with time but unfortunately, they always had to retire at age 60, despite their expertise.
“We are trying to find ways of utilising the expertise of journalists who have retired but could still contribute to the profession,” he added.
Mr Kofi Akordor expressed gratitude to Togbi Seddoh for recognising his efforts and honouring him.
He was also grateful to the Graphic Communications Group Limited for offering him the platform to showcase his expertise which had won him the admiration of readers such as Togbi Seddoh.
Mr Akordor’s profile
Mr Akordor retired from the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL) in April this year, after 32 years of active service to the company.
He joined the company in February 1982 as a reporter and rose through the ranks to become the Night Editor in 2013.
He cut his journalism teeth in the very year he was employed by the company while reporting the proceedings of the Special Investigation Board, the body set up by the Provisional National Defence Council to probe the abduction and murder of three High Court judges and a retired army officer in 1982.
In a career that spanned more than three decades, he won the ultimate award in journalism in Ghana— the coveted Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Journalist of the Year in 2009. He was also the Best Columnist Award winner in 2003 and the Best Features Writer in 2004.
