A statement issued Monday by the National Security Council Secretariat and signed by Col. E.W.K. Nibo said the activities of the private developers on the KIA land close to the Airport installations has led to encroachment of the land and brought a lot of pressure to bear on the Airport.

It said “The trend has so far caused massive encroachment on the airport environment posing a grave threat to flight operations and creating hazards such as bird strikes and stray animals on the runway.”

The statement further reminded the public of a 1998 Land Commission notice that aimed at halting all further developments on the KIA acquisition in order to promote the airport's land use objectives and safety and security of aviation operations, which notice, the statement said, has been disregarded by private developers.

It further announced that the boundaries of KIA have been redefined to curtail non-conforming developments and other unauthorized activities so as to prevent further encroachment and counselled interested parties in doubt whether their development falls within the area to call at the Lands Commission for clarification.
