Kukurantumi police station closed after youth attempted to burn it down following suspect’s death in custody
The Ghana Police Service has announced the temporary closure of the Kukurantumi Police Station in the Eastern Region after some youth attempted to set the facility on fire following the death of a suspect in custody.
In a statement issued on Saturday, September 20, 2025, the Police said the suspect, whose name was not released, became unconscious while in custody and was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
His body has been deposited at the morgue for preservation and autopsy.
“The death of the suspect triggered violent action by some youth, who attempted to burn the station and vandalised sections of the facility,” the statement said.
It added, “As a result of these disturbances, the Kukurantumi Police Station has been temporarily closed down, and police services to the community have been relocated to nearby stations.”
The Police Service noted that investigations had begun into both the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s death and the attempted arson on the station.
It warned that those found responsible would face prosecution.
The police assured residents of continued security in Kukurantumi and indicated that the Inspector-General of Police had directed the Eastern Regional Command to intensify patrols in the community to maintain law and order.
