Kwahu Traditional Council reaffirms single paramountcy following destoolment of former Omanhene

The Kwahu Traditional Council has reiterated that there is no dual paramountcy within the Kwahu Kingdom, following the destoolment of the former Kwahumanhene, Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II, and the installation of his successor.

In a statement issued by the Council, the Akyeamehene of Kwahu, Nana Asiedu Kwabeng IV, stressed that Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II was formally removed from office on 19th October 2024 after violating the sacred oath he swore as Omanhene that “he will not eat red oil and smear our white cloth in it.” His actions, according to the Council, had “soiled our cloth with red oil that he has eaten.”

Events leading to destoolment

The statement said the destoolment process was triggered by a petition submitted to the government by Mr. Collins Darkwah Aboagye on September 12, 2024, which led to a directive from the Office of the President on October 4, 2024, instructing the former Omanhene to respond to allegations against him.

It said further complications arose when the Bank of Ghana, on October 10, 2024, issued a directive citing alleged improper conduct and damage to the reputation of the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB), where he served as Board Chairman. The directive ordered him to resign immediately, further compounding concerns about his leadership.

In response, the youth and people of Kwahu mobilised, demanding his removal for what they described as an embarrassment to the integrity of Kwahu, a land known for its honourable business community.

On October 19, 2024, the Kingmakers of Kwahu performed the customary rites to officially destool him. The Kwahu Traditional Council later affirmed this decision in a meeting on 13th November 2024, where all chiefs present signed a resolution, which was widely publicised in major newspapers and online platforms.

Installation of a New Omanhene

Following deliberations, the traditional authorities selected a successor from the royal lineage. On January 25, 2025, Daasebre Akuamoah Boateng III was installed as the new Omanhene of Kwahu in a peaceful and orderly ceremony.

The Adontenghene, who had served as acting Omanhene, formally handed over the "Akofena", the symbol of authority in the Kwahu Kingdom, to Daasebre Akuamoah Boateng III, thereby legitimising his rule.

Council denies claims of dual Paramountcy

The Kwahu Traditional Council has firmly dismissed any claims of dual paramountcy as false and baseless. The statement stressed that the transition was conducted “without conflict or contention,” and urged the public to disregard any attempts to incite division or violence within the kingdom.

The Council called upon all Kwahu citizens, both at home and abroad, to rally behind Daasebre Akuamoah Boateng III, supporting his vision for development, peace, and unity.

"May Daasebre Akuamoah Boateng III reign and live long, and may Kwahu continue to thrive in integrity and harmony," the statement concluded.
