69th Independence Day: Patriotism must move beyond slogans to tangible action – President Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghanaians to transform their patriotic expressions from mere words into concrete actions that benefit the nation.

Speaking at the Jubilee House during celebrations marking Ghana's 69th Independence Day, the President challenged citizens to reassess what it truly means to love one's country, insisting that genuine patriotism is measured by deeds rather than rhetoric.

"Patriotism should extend beyond just slogans," President Mahama stated.

He argued that while Ghanaians are quick to profess their love for the nation, such professions must be matched by consistent, everyday behaviour that demonstrates a genuine commitment to the country's progress.

The President painted a picture of what authentic patriotism looks like in daily life, offering specific examples that resonate with ordinary citizens.

"True patriotism must be shown through our everyday actions, the citizen who protects public property, the public servant who treats every Ghanaian with respect, and the entrepreneur who opts to invest his resources in Ghana's future”, he said.

These examples, Mahama suggested, represent the building blocks of a nation where citizens take collective responsibility for national development.

The President stressed patriotism to civic responsibility and integrity, linking freedom with duties when he declared that "Freedom demands responsibility," and urged discipline in public life as an essential component of patriotic conduct.

Mahama insisted that national interest must supersede narrower loyalties, stressing that "Above all, we must place country above party, above tribe and above personal interest," thereby framing patriotism as prioritising Ghana over factionalism.

He appealed to collective identity and humility with the reminder that "Citizens, Ghana is bigger than any one of us," using this sentiment to reinforce that authentic patriotism requires placing the nation's well-being firmly before individual gain.
