Leaked tape trial: Prosecution withdraws charges against Ofosu Ampofo, Boahen

The Attorney-General and Minister of Justice has withdrawn all charges in the trial of former National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Chairman, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, and former Deputy Communications Officer, Anthony Kwaku Boahen.

The two were standing trial over a leaked tape in which they were allegedly heard inciting violence against the leadership of the Electoral Commission (EC) and the National Peace Council (NPC).

Both Ofosu Ampofo and Boahen had pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit assault against a public officer, while Ofosu Ampofo additionally pleaded not guilty to two counts of assault against a public officer.

A notice of withdrawal, signed by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Yvonne Atakora Obuobisa, stated: “Please take note that at the next hearing of this suit, the Prosecutor on the instructions of the Honourable Attorney-General hereby withdraws all offences and or charges against all the Accused Persons herein under section 59(1), (2)(b)(ii) and (5) of the Criminal and Other Offences (Procedure) Act of Ghana, Act 30.”
