Lebanese community supports 16 law students

The Lebanese community in Ghana has awarded scholarships to 16 law students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST)

The scholarships went to students who distinguished themselves in their academic work during the 2014/2015 academic year.

According to the Lebanese Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Ali Halabi, the decision to award the scholarship to students of the law faculty was based on the fact that the law profession was one on which every society was grounded and social progress could stall if it failed.

He said it was, therefore, the belief of the Lebanese community that if given the needed push, the students would be drivers of social progress in the country.

Speaking at the ceremony to hand over the scholarships to the students, Mr Halabi was happy that the Lebanese community had, in its existence in the country over a century ago, contributed immensely to the growth of the Ghanaian economy and also offered employment to thousands of Ghanaians through its various conglomerates.

Commendation
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. William Otoo Ellis, commended the Lebanese community for their gesture, which had been running for years now, and advised the students, especially those graduating next year, never to forget those who stretched a hand of support to them even as they took up important positions in society.

Gratitude
One of the beneficiary students, Ms Anita Osei, who spoke on behalf of her mates, was full of praise for the Lebanese community and the ambassador in particular, for successfully implementing the award all these years, adding that “by this singular act, you have clearly demonstrated to us that the things we do for ourselves die with us but what we do for others remain immortal”.

In all, 100 scholarships have so far been given to tertiary students across the country as well as children of fallen heroes in the security services during United Nations peacekeeping missions.
