The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has inaugurated a new board for the Volta River Authority (VRA), tasking the members to help revitalise Ghana’s premier power generation institution.
Members of the reconstituted board were sworn into office in Accra on Monday, June 23, following their appointment by President John Dramani Mahama in consultation with the Council of State.
Speaking at the swearing in ceremony, Mr Jinapor underscored the board’s crucial role in repositioning the VRA as a leader in renewable energy and regional power generation. “This board has been entrusted with the task of improving VRA’s operations, optimising hydro and thermal assets, and firmly anchoring renewable initiatives within the Authority’s core mandate. VRA must work to be the lead institution when it comes to power generation,” the Minister stated.
The newly sworn-in board is chaired by Jabesh Amissah-Arthur, a power sector professional. Other members include Edward Ekow Obeng-Kenzo, who also serves as Acting Chief Executive of the Authority, Dr. Lawrence Ofosu Adjare, Collins Dauda, Fred Kwesi Agbenyo, Lawyer Wonder Victor Kutor, Awulai Attibrukusu III, and Peggy Addo. Together, they bring a blend of technical, legal, traditional, and political expertise to the governance of the Authority.
Speaking on behalf of the board, Ing. Amissah-Arthur expressed gratitude to President Mahama for the confidence reposed in them and promised to deliver on their mandate. “The fortunes of VRA have stagnated and dwindled over the years as a result of government policies. We will provide strategic guidance and direction to bring VRA back as the lead power generator in the sub-region and Africa,” he said.
The Minister highlighted four key areas the board must prioritise: operational revitalisation, acceleration of green transition efforts, human capital development, and improved public and stakeholder engagement. He also assured the board of the Ministry’s full support, stressing that the President has “absolute confidence” in their collective ability to execute this important national assignment.
The reconstitution of the board comes at a time when the country is seeking to strengthen energy security, expand access to clean power, and reclaim VRA’s position as a leading utility in West Africa.
The board is expected to work closely with the Ministry and relevant stakeholders to implement strategic reforms and innovations critical to Ghana’s future energy resilience.
