Machomen for Good and Justice asks doctors to end strike

Machomen for Good and Justice, a body- building group for the promotion of peace, has joined a legion of Ghanaian civil society groups to urge the striking doctors to return to work in the interest of the ordinary Ghanaian.

Apparently frustrated by the protracted strike and its associated consequences on the ordinary citizen, the machomen were at the Daily Graphic office in Kumasi to use the paper as a channel to plead with the doctors to return to work, while negotiation continued.

The group, led by its President, Gilbert Ntiamoah (Polos), said while appealing to the doctors, it was also important that the government softened its entrenched stance to meet the doctors half-way.

“There appears to be a problem with trust from both sides as none trusts each other. In spite of that, we still think that if they move away from their entrenched positions, the problems could be solved,” Polos told the Daily Graphic in Kumasi.

The president urged Ghanaians to stop daring the doctors to resign because if they should carry through their threat, it was the ordinary person who would suffer.

He said the doctors could decide to travel en mass to other parts of the world where their services were needed but the sick may even die before seeking help outside the country.

Mr Polos also appealed to government spokespersons to stop inciting the public against the doctors and allow for cool heads to prevail.
The national president of the machomen said ‘flexing of muscles’ by the government or the doctors as to who was right would lead the country nowhere.

He said if the doctors finally decided to go back to work, it must not be construed for weakness but they must be applauded, while the government should keep its promise in order to build trust.
