Speaking at the World Environment Day celebrations in Kwabenya in Accra, on Thursday, June 5, the President said the government is taking decisive steps to protect Ghana’s forests and tackle plastic pollution.

“We have been planting trees and cutting them down at the same time,” he said. “To reduce deforestation, I will issue a directive to stop the use of wood for producing school furniture. Going forward, we will adopt environmentally friendly alternatives such as recycled plastic or metal.”

President Mahama described the move as part of a broader national strategy to curb the destruction of forest resources and promote sustainability in public procurement.

The World Environment Day 2025 was marked under the theme “Restore Our Earth: From Words to Action,” with President Mahama calling on all sectors to support national efforts to build a greener and more sustainable Ghana.
