“Watch and pray and let your spirit shine as Christians to pull more people into the church,” he stressed.

The Bishop-elect Rt. Rev. Titus Kofi Awotwi Pratt, who is also the Bishop of the Accra Diocese, was delivering a sermon to climax the 20th anniversary of St Stephen Methodist Church at Gbawe New Town in Accra last Sunday.

The theme for the celebration was “Pressing on towards the goal,” as found in Philippians 3:12.

Power of prayer

Rt. Rev Pratt spoke of the importance of prayers as a strong weapon of the Christian against his foes and urged the congregation to intensify their prayers for the task ahead.

Other congregations, he stressed, should watch and pray and reach out to people so that those who would visit the church with the purpose of worshipping there would feel attracted and welcome to stay.

Rt. Rev. Pratt said 20 years in the life of the church was only the beginning.

He therefore, asked the members to work seriously for the society to become a vibrant force to reckon with in the Methodist family.

He also asked the members to draw inspiration from the spirit-filled man,  St Stephen, after whom the society was named, because he was a courageous and honest person who was martyred.

He pleaded with the members of the church to not allow any past incident to blur their vision for the future growth of the church.

Joy, peace goodwill

Joyful songs of praise and dance marked the service.

Rt Rev. Pratt prayed for joy, peace and goodwill in the country during the festivities.

He expressed the hope that Christ, the Great Leader, would give the country leaders who would genuinely serve the nation.

Members who had served and contributed in various ways to the growth of the church since 1994 were honoured.

The elderly and the youth had earlier on Saturday gone on a picnic to demonstrate that spiritual growth should go on in a healthy physical body.

The picnic ended with a general cleaning of the church and its surroundings.
