Maritime Authority assists Health Directorate with PPE

The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has presented personal protective equipment (PPE) to the Upper East Regional Directorate of Health Services.

The presentation, which was in response to an appeal by the health authorities, is to support the frontline staff in the fight against the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the region.

The PPE included disposable gowns, face and nose masks, examination gloves, gallons of hand sanitisers, Veronica buckets and non-contact thermometers.

The Upper East Regional Director of Health Services, Dr Winfred Ofosu, who received the items on behalf of the directorate, said although the region had not recorded any positive COVID-19 case, there was no room for complacency.

Readiness

He said frontline medical staff ought to be ready and properly equipped to confront the deadly virus which had forced countries across the world to shut themselves from even their neighbours.

“It is in the light of this that we find the generous donation by the Ghana Maritime Authority to be extremely commendable and timely,” he stressed.

The Director General of the GMA, Mr Thomas Kofi Alonsi, who made the presentation, said the authority recognised the risk faced by medical officers.

“We know if you are to be able to confront this virus effectively, you must not be overly worried about your own safety. That is why we thought it fit and proper to remove that fear by giving you these PPE, so you can be the brave professionals that you are,” he said.

Mr Alonsi said the nation owed the health professionals a debt of gratitude “for the sacrifices that you make to keep all of us alive. We must do our part to minimise risks to your lives too.”

He said while the government mobilised resources to procure the necessary materials, public and private individuals and organisations must chip in their bit.

Builsa North

The Director General presented similar items to the Builsa North Health Directorate at Sandema as well as the St Lucas Hospital at Wiaga, also in the Builsa North District.

He reminded the health authorities in the two towns to remain vigilant and take reports of any suspected case seriously as that was the surest way to keep the virus at bay.

The acting District Public Health Nurse for Builsa North, Ms Pognab Comfort Amoak, who received the donation in Sandema, said donors must not forget about distant and less resourced communities.
