The jointly funded project is meant to serve Mayera, Adusa and surrounding communities in the municipality with water.

The facility is estimated to produce 60,000 gallons of potable water a day to about 15,000 residents.

It consists of two large diameter boreholes, pump houses, a pipe network and a 200-metre cubic overhead tank powered by electricity from the national grid.

Known as the Mayera-Adusa Small Town Water Supply Scheme, the facility is part of the Ghana-Netherlands Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) programme.

The occasion was graced by the deputy ministers of Local Government and Rural Development, Nii Lante Vanderpuiye and Mr Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum, the Municipal Chief Executive of the GWMA, Mr Sam Atukwei Quaye, the acting Netherlands Ambassador to Ghana, Ms Caecilia Wijgers, chiefs, queenmothers and people in the area.

It was also used to commission a five-member board of directors to oversee the day-to-day running of the facility, chaired by the Queenmother of Adusa, Nana Yaa Kortieley I.

Maintenance of facility

In an address, a Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Nii Lante Vanderpuiye, charged the residents to maintain the facility to ensure its longevity.

He called on the traditional leaders in the area to ensure that places of convenience were constructed after selling lands for the construction of houses.

“Chiefs must ensure that lands sold to buyers have specific places of convenience as they build their houses,” he said.

Mr Vanderpuiye further called on the traditional leaders to help to make communities in the country clean and safe.

Make system work

The acting Netherlands Ambassador to Ghana, Ms Caecilia Wijgers, also advised the residents to maintain the facility to make it last long.

She also advised them to contribute a token for the regular maintenance of the borehole.

“To maintain the water system, money is needed. Therefore, the little you contribute will help with its maintenance so that it may not break down,” she said.
