David Ackon pleaded not guilty to charges of possession of narcotic drug without lawful authority but after the trial of the case, he was found guilty.

Sentencing, the presiding Judge, Mr Francis Obiri, said the laws of the country frowns on possession and use of narcotic drugs without lawful authority.

He said it was, therefore, imperative to discourage such tendencies since it was tantamount to destroying the future prospects  of the youth.

Consequently, the judge sentenced Ackon to five years to serve as a deterrent to others who were in that trade.

Facts of case

Prosecuting, Assistant State Attorney, Madam Serina Da-Seglah told the court that on May 26, 2013 the police  were on duty at the Ofankor Police Barrier.

A Madza mini bus pulled up at the check point, and a routine inspection was undertaken.

She said in the course of the inspection, the police found three boxes that were loaded with the Indian hemp in the boot of the bus.

Ackon who was a passenger on the bus claimed ownership of the boxes and alleged that the boxes contained television sets.

Upon opening the boxes, the police found 89 compressed plant materials suspected to be Indian hemp.

Ackon was immediately arrested with the exhibits.

When interrogated, he named a certain Kwesi, who lived in Koforidua, as his supplier.

However, he failed to lead police to find the alleged Kwesi.

The exhibits were sent to the police forensic laboratory for testing, and they proved positive for Indian hemp, a narcotic drug.
