Mexico, Ghana have strong ties

Members of the Mexican community in Ghana have marked the 205th Independence anniversary of Mexico at a ceremony in Accra.

The event, which was characterized by music and dance, was attended by some members of the diplomatic community, as well as ministers of state.

They included the Colombian Ambassador to Ghana, Mrs Claudia Quintero Torbay; the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Madam Dzifa Abla Gomashie, and the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Nana Oye Lithur.

Addressing the gathering, the Mexican Ambassador to Ghana, Madam Maria De Los Angeles Arriola Aguirre, said Ghana and Mexico had, over the years, built strong ties, particularly in the multilateral field.

She said although Mexico was currently faced with some challenges, it still remained an international actor with one of the most dynamic and stable economies in the world and a reliable partner to do business with.

To that effect, she said, the Mexican government, in its effort to turn into a globally responsible actor, continued to make historic and structural reforms in some sectors of the economy.

That, she said, included labour market systems, telecommunications and energy, adding that another important reform was the decision to extend its presence around the world, where Africa played an important role.

Speaking on behalf of the Ghana government, Nana Lithur said Ghana, like Mexico, had, in spite of various challenges, made important strides to improve the well-being of the Ghanaian, saying “That is why Ghana cherishes its relations with Mexico.”

“We believe that the two countries can do a lot together at both the multilateral and the bilateral levels, as well as in trade.
