Already, 11,000 households in the region are benefiting from the programme which started in 2008.

The Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Nana Oye Lithur, made these known when she paid a working visit to some beneficiary communities in the region.

The visit took the minister and her entourage to places such as Avegah, Godenu, Dambai and Kubalou.

LEAP Expansion

So far, 146,800 households across the country are on LEAP, which supports the vulnerable, orphans and persons with disabilities, with various sums of bi-monthly cash transfers.

Nana Oye said as part of a LEAP expansion programme, it was expected that by December 2016, a total of 350,000 households would be enrolled onto the LEAP programme.

The 2010 Ghana National Population and Housing Census indicated that 2.2 million people were considered pro-poor, who in the view of Nana Oye needed support.

Nana Oye said the government was doing everything possible to capture all of the 2.2 million pro-poor people under a social intervention programme to help alleviate their poor state.

At Avegah and Godenu in the Hohoe Municipality, a community sensitisation programme was organised to begin the E-data collection exercise of about 5,000 people.

The minister said the migration from manual to electronic payment would help the beneficiaries to get the exact amount due them without any third party interference.

E-payment

At Dambai in the Krachi West District, the minister, together with the Member of Parliament (MP) for Krachi East,  Mr Wisdom Gidusu, observed the E-payment and enrolment of existing beneficiaries onto the E-Zwich platform while at Kubalou in the Krachi Nchumuru District, she monitored the electronic data collection process of beneficiaries in the community.

She said 500 elderly people in each of the beneficiary communities would be enrolled onto the Eban card programme, which was a social intervention that would make the elderly enjoy rebated public transport services, as well as receive special treatment in banking halls and other social facilities.

Also, she said the physically challenged in the communities would be enrolled onto the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Dambai, Mr Peter Yao Awuranyi, on behalf of the people, thanked the government for the LEAP programme in the district.
