Mortuary operators warned: Regularise operations or risk immediate shutdown

The Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Agency (MoFFA) has directed all unlicensed mortuaries and funeral homes, both public and private, to regularise their operations within one week or face closure.

In a press release dated October 22, the Agency expressed concern over the continued operation of several facilities without the required licences, describing the situation as a violation of Section 55 of the Health Institutions and Facilities Act, 2011 (Act 829).

“The Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Agency (MoFFA)… wishes to inform the general public, both private and public mortuaries and funeral facilities that are operating without the requisite licence to take immediate steps to regularise their operations with the Agency within one (1) week from the date of this publication,” the statement emphasised.

The MoFFA reminded operators that under the law, running an unlicensed mortuary or funeral home constitutes an offence punishable by fines or by the temporary or permanent closure of the facility.

The Agency warned that any institution that fails to comply within the stipulated period risks immediate shutdown.

It further reaffirmed its mandate to license, control, and regulate all establishments involved in the storage, transportation, and disposal of human remains, stressing that the directive forms part of efforts to ensure public health safety and uphold professional standards within the funeral service sector.
