Movement of poultry from Greater Accra banned

The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) has banned the movement of poultry and poultry products from the Greater Accra Region to the rest of the country.

The ban followed the outbreak of bird flu in nine out of the 14 districts in the Greater Accra Region.

The Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture in charge of Livestocks, Dr Hanna Bissiw, who announced the ban at a meeting with poultry farmers and traders yesterday in Accra, said veterinary and security officers had been stationed at the various barriers to enforce the ban.

Decision

She said it was crucial for stakeholders to take pragmatic control measures to stop the spread of the disease in the Greater Accra Region in particular and to other regions of the country.

“Consequently, poultry and poultry products from the regions experiencing the outbreaks cannot be permitted into regions that are not experiencing the outbreak,” she indicated.

Dr Bissiw therefore said the movement of poultry in the affected districts should be limited to those areas.

She named the affected districts as: Accra Metro Assembly (AMA), Kpone Katamanso Municipal, Ningo Prampram, Ga East, Ga South, Ada West, La Dade Kotowor, La Nkwantanan and Ledzokuku.

The five safe districts are Ashaiman Municipal Assembly, Ga West, Ga Central, Shai Osudoku and Adenta Municipal Assembly.

Outbreak

The highly pathogenic Avian influenza, (H5N1), commonly called bird flu, was first recorded in the country in 2007 but was successfully controlled and contained.

In May this year, however, bird flu outbreaks were recorded in the Greater Accra Region.

There were also some reported cases in some parts of the Ashanti and Volta regions.

Dr Bissiw, however, gave an assurance that those cases in the two regions had since been contained.

She further indicated that there had not been any reported outbreak of the disease in the country for the past 10 days.
