Nabulo residents call for telecom service

Residents of Nabulo, a farming community in the Upper West Region, have appealed  to stakeholders in the telecommunications industry to help install facilities to provide mobile phone services in the area.

Currently, the community, which is about 45 kilometres from the Builsa South District of the Upper East Region, is  cut off from the rest of the country  due to the non-availability of a single mobile phone network in the area. Furthermore, the Biometric Membership System that ensures the biometric registration of beneficiaries of the National Health Insurance Scheme cannot be conducted due to the non-availability of a single mobile phone network service in the area.

One of the residents who works with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) at Tumu in the Upper West Region, Mr Alex Bipuah, stated this in an interview with the Daily Graphic at Nabulo during a meeting to discuss ways of providing a bridge over River Sissili to link some farming communities in the Upper East and West regions.

The distance between Nabulo and Bolgatanga is shorter when one uses the bridge  but currently residents of Nabulo have to pass through Han to Tumu in the Upper West Region, to get to Sandema and Bolgatanga, which is over 200 kilometres

According to Mr. Bipuah, the non-availability of telecommunication service was affecting effective healthcare delivery in the area.

"In case of emergency situations what can one do under the circumstance?"he asked.

Mr Bipuah indicated that the situation had compelled some residents to adopt various kinds of strategies in emergency situations such as climbing onto the highest tree in the community or hilly areas just to get a little reception to make calls.

He intimated that this had led  residents  to seeking help from traditional birth attendants particularly during complications during labour.
