NAGRAT Women’s Wing launches breast screening

The Women’s Wing of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has launched a nationwide breast screening campaign for its members and the general public.

According to the wing, the screening had become necessary as a result of the increasingly alarming rate of breast cancer cases in the country.

Speaking at the launch in Accra last Thursday, the Gender Desk Coordinator of NAGRAT, Ms Rebecca Ocran Abaidoo, lamented the increased cases of the disease among women in the association, stressing that preventive measures had to be put in place.

“We organised this programme because breast cancer has become a threat to women and it has begun manifesting itself in our union,” she said.

She explained that it was important to safeguard the strength and health needs of its members in order to prevent unforeseen circumstances.

The screening, she said, would help detect symptoms of breast cancer to enable those who were affected to seek early treatment.

Target Audience

Ms Abaidoo said the screening was opened to the ladies who were part of NAGRAT as well as the spouses of the male members and their relations.

However, she said, people who were not part of the association would be screened at a discounted fee.

“Members of the general public are allowed to do the screening but unlike our members, they would have to pay a fee at a discount,” she said.

She said the association had a policy in which people with cancerous diseases were treated by the Swedish Ghana Medical Centre (SGMC). That, she said was because members of NAGRAT contributed to the funds of the SGMC, hence treatment was free.
“Members contribute GH¢2 monthly to the SGMC and because of that the fee is already catered for when we go there,” she added.

President’s remarks

In his address, the president of NAGRAT, Mr Christian Addai-Poku, urged members of the association to take the exercise seriously to know their status.

“It is imperative that our members across the country take this programme seriously and take advantage of this opportunity to be sure of their status,” he said.

He said recently the association had been receiving reports of numerous cases of breast cancer among its female members and even though it had been providing them with the needed support, the association continued to lose its affected members.

“We implore the GES to take a cue from what we are doing to promote healthy lives of its employees, as a healthy worker is a great asset for productivity,” he stated.
