Under the initiative, the personnel will take part in clean-up exercises in their respective areas.

This follows a decision by the National Service Personnel Association (NASPA) to join hands with the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development for the national exercise.

The acting Executive Director of the NSS, Dr Whyte Kpesah, announced this at a press briefing in Accra yesterday.

He was in the company of the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Julius Debrah, and the President of NASPA, Mr Ekow Vincent.

Dr Kpesah said the combined effort of NASPA and the Ministry of Local Government in the fight against filth in the country would help keep towns and cities clean.

He expressed optimism that by joining the exercise, the service personnel would be exposed to potential business opportunities in garbage and waste management.

He said the personnel could also be motivated to set up sanitation related businesses that would create employment avenues for themselves and other service personnel.

He called on religious and corporate bodies, as well as traditional leaders, to support the programme by providing the needed tools for the upcoming and subsequent exercises.

Mr Debrah expressed delight at the decision of the service personnel to partake in the national clean-up exercise, noting, “It is a sign of hope that a generation is ready to help keep our environment clean.”

He promised to ensure the availability of equipment that would be needed for the successful organisation of the next nationwide clean up.

For his part, Mr Vincent said poor sanitation had become a canker in the country, for which reason members of the association were ready to serve as sanitation ambassadors to educate the people on the need to keep clean surroundings.
