At a fundraising dinner held in Accra last Saturday to unveil its charter, the President of the club, Mr Eric Fiifi Ofori-Atta, said providing relief for the needy in underprivileged communities in the country was the club’s principal motivation.

“Rotary is not only about service above self, but also making a real difference in the lives of communities.

“This Rotary Club plans to undertake a number of humanitarian and development programmes that provide material support to various needy and destitute communities and educational institutions within its area of operations and even beyond,” he said.

Projects

In that regard, Mr Ofori-Atta announced that the club intended to construct a footbridge over the Onyasia River in the West Legon Community where a section of the area was isolated for long periods because the footbridge that linked it to the rest of the community was weak and unsafe.

He said at the moment, the bridge was the only access route for children living in the cut-off community to get to school.

He said with the bridge completed, schoolchildren would no more become stranded whenever it rained heavily.

“We would assist the local community to build a strong, permanent and secure footbridge over the river so that children in that section of the community that get detached when it rains can go to school safely,”  he said.

Four-way test

He gave an assurance that the members would maintain the core values of the Rotary Club and would be guided by the Four-way Test and Counsel of its sponsoring club, the Accra-West Rotary Club.

The Four-Way Test is a nonpartisan and non-sectarian ethical guide for Rotarians for their use in personal and professional relationships.

The newly formed Rotary Club covers the neighbourhoods of West Legon, GIMPA, Haatso and Dome-Kwabenya.

The Rotary Club of Accra-Westlands is the 36th club to be formed in Ghana and currently has as members 34 Rotarians.

The District Governor of  District 9102 , Dr Maurice Edorh, presented the club with its charter on behalf of Rotary International.

In a speech, Dr Edorh stated, “Rotary Clubs around the world undertake service projects that meet the needs of their communities with assistance from the Rotary Foundation”.

“As Rotarians, you have the commitment to raise the standard of living of your neighbours and you can do this by coming up with projects that suit the community,” he said.
