The programme was organised by Integrated Development In Focus (DIF), a non-governmental organisation, in collaboration with the Ghana Health Service with the focus on 11 hard-to-reach communities in the Ga South municipality.

The project forms part of a global agenda to vaccinate more than 80 million children and save over 1.4 million lives through immunisation around the world.

For this cause, the UK government has committed 814 million pounds through the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisations (GAVI) to be distributed to selected countries for the project.

GAVI, which was established in 2000, is tasked with addressing the urgent need to boost immunisation coverage worldwide to help meet MDG 4 on ending maternal and child mortality. In Ghana, DIF’s contribution towards the goal was to assist community health centres cover hard-to-reach areas with quality medical care.

At Tomefa, the team was assisted by health personnel from the Ngleshie-Amanfro Health Centre to immunize over 200 children below two years against killer diseases.

The Director of DIF, Mrs Josephine Agbo Nettey said the project has become necessary to augment the efforts of the community health personnel who have logistical and transportation challenges accessing remote communities to provide health care services to the residents.

The Project Co-ordinator of the DIF, Abraham Godbless Ashie said the rural folks were co-operative during sensitization and education for a held for them and lauded the massive attendance, saying the people are beginning to understand the need for immunization.

The Deputy Director of Nursing of the GHS and the Head of Nurses at the Ngleshie-Amanfro Health Centre, Madam Florence Aku-Gbedzra commended DIF for their continuous assistance to the communities in the municipality and asked other organisations and philanthropists to emulate it. She also called on government to assist the health centre with vehicles and more nurses to make it easier for them to conveniently attend to the health needs of the remote community dwellers.
