The Executive Director of the non-governmental organisation, Ms Obuobia Darko-Opoku, stated that the deplorable and weak nature of the bridges in the area influenced her foundation’s decision to support the community to prevent any possible catastrophe.
She made this known after inspecting bridges at Mallam in Accra last Saturday, following media report on the deplorable state of bridges in the locality.

Reconstruction

She indicated that the reconstruction of a bridge at the Princess School Complex at the Mallam-Borla road would begin on Monday to enable school children to use the bridge.

Ms Darko-Opoku, who is also the Deputy Executive Secretary of the Ghana Free Zones Board, told the media that she would repair two wooden bridges that linked residents of Mallam to McCarthy Hill.

She explained that the Ga South Municipality had plans to reconstruct a drain in the area and would, therefore, construct a new bridge, but added that she would repair the wooden bridge for use in the short term.

Background

Residents of the community last Friday appealed to the assembly to reconstruct a concrete bridge that was destroyed as a result of the June 3 floods and also repair a wooden bridge that had been rendered weak and wobbly as a result of the disaster.

The June 3 floods destroyed a concrete bridge and also caused damage to a wooden bridge constructed by the residents in another part of the community.

According to a resident, six people, including two children, got drowned in the June 3 disaster when they attempted to use the bridges.
The residents, therefore,x appealed for immediate measures to be taken to remedy the situation.

A concerned resident of the area, Mr Frank Quartey, commended Ms Darko-Opoku for her support to reconstruct and renovate the weak bridges.
